The film follows a group of Nenets women gathering firewood in a snow-covered tundra. It is part of a larger Yamal Nenets Series, that explores the daily life of nomadic reindeer pastoralists on the Yamal Peninsula in Western Siberia during the spring calving season. The footage for the series was captured during a three-month ethnographic fieldwork in 1999.
Biografia
Liivo Niglas is an Estonian documentary filmmaker and anthropologist. He runs MP DOC, an independent production company focused on anthropological documentaries. He studied documentary filmmaking at Ateliers Varan in Paris and has filmed in Siberia, Africa, Central Asia and North America. His films have received numerous awards, including the Prix IUCN at Visions du Réel , the Golden Olive at the Kalamata International Documentary Film Festival, the Grand Prix at the International Festival of Ethnological Film, the Basil Wright Prize at the RAI Film Festival, as well as top national honors in Estonia.
